Signs of spring, under snow.

I must've gotten just a little too excited about all the signs of spring in my garden.  Winter came back to remind me that there are still 10 days until spring is officially here.  It snowed several times during the weekend.  Yesterday it really started coming down.  I wondered how all my poor plants were doing.  It's supposed to be down in the 20's at night for the next few nights.

clematis armandii

the flower buds look ready to bloom

corylopsis 'Buttercup' (winter hazel)

look closely and you will see the yellow blooms

Pink flowering currant

beneath the snowy coat, her bright pink blooms don't look bothered by the snow

Here is the Corsican hellebore I'm saving for The Gardeness at Garden Muse.  I moved it under some shelter and am trying to take care of it.
yes, she's drooping a little

but, I see that she may be in bloom by the time she moves to her new home

As of this morning the pond has a layer of ice on it, and snow still covers the grass, trees and plants.

  2. We haven't got your snow - but I think I'd rather have that than the endless rain we've had for the past few days!
    Stay warm!

  3. Yes, we got 4 inches of snow yesterday. Hubby reminded me to be grateful for it, as it's supposed to get down to 4 degrees tonight and the snow will help insulate the plants a bit. I'm still nervous for the plump buds on my wisteria and rosebushes, so I might throw out some sheets this evening. VW

  7. The weather is so unpredictable this time of year. We have had near 80 the last two days. I am certain we will have more cold days to brown the blooms on my saucer magnolia - happens every year!

  8. I feel your pain Catherine! It snowed here as well and everything is looking pretty droopy. I hope the temps rebound soon, I was enjoying the signs of life too. At least you have some pretty pictures. Clematis armandii caught my eye. That's one I'm not familiar with but I'd like to be since it blooms so early! I'll have to look it up.

  9. Darla - I'm glad you're having some warm weather, at least I can see your flowers. I'll be over to visit soon!

Nutty Gnome - Doesn't the weather know we want to get outside? I hope the rain stops and the snow melts.

VW - You did get it worse than us! I'm worried about a lot the buds on my plants too, at least the snow will insulate the plants on the ground.

Becca - Thanks, they sure are trying! I'm glad they haven't given up yet.

Dirt Princess - It was nice to see the color under all of the white!

Laura - Wow, that's a lot of rain!! Hope it stops.

Mildred - It really is unpredictable. I hope your magnolia blooms are okay. They are such pretty flowers.

Kathleen - Snow for you too? Clematis armandii is a great evergreen vine, it has a nice fragrance too!

  13. Very cool photos! I can't believe all the snow that stuck around your place. Please tell me you have lovely sun today! Oooo, that hellebore looks lovely. Thanks so much!

  14. Tina - It's starting to melt, but still around. Crossing my fingers everything is okay.

Rob - Yes, it's time for it to finally go! Time for spring.

Heather - Is yours gone yet? I don't think I've ever seen any of these flowers with snow on them before.

Melanthia - Yes, we do have sun now! It's cold though!! Snow is still in the shady areas.
The hellebore looks much better now that it's under shelter and a little warmer.

  18. We had a little snow today, and it is currently 18 degrees. Well, in a few weeks, surely we will see a difference in the weather, and what's growing. We need to persevere!

  21. Bren - I hope the rains aren't too bad. Any weather that stops us from getting out there is annoying. You're right, we do get very excited to get out there :)

Susie - I'm hoping he'll be gone in the next day or two!

Brooke - Hope it doesn't stay cold. Please be sure to send that warm sun up here!!
I've been doing a lot of practicing with the macro setting on my camera. It's an older digital, but it does a pretty good job. I'd love to get a new one soon.

Sue - Sounds like a lot of people are still having cold weather or a lot of rain. Eventually it has to get better.

Anna- It was pretty, I must admit.

Lanny - Yes, I think you're right. Hopefully it'll take a look though and see it's time for a change :)

  22. Hi Catherine, looks like Mother Nature is reminding us who is really in charge. All your flowers look so pretty and are undamaged I hope. We have had several 80 degree days here, but there will probably be snow at least once before spring finally arrives for the year. It is always like that. Love your winter hazel, maybe someday mine will bloom, with or without snow on the buds. :-)

  23. We had some snow here the other night but luckily it didnt settle - I did find myself thinking oh no not more snow we have had enough this year.

  24. Does your clematis armandii mind this kind of weather? I feel like mine always dies back very horribly after early-spring frosts so I wonder if there's anything I can do to help it. Poor old thing! It has blooms on it but they are not open, and now I wonder if they will just rot off. :( - Karen

  25. Frances - That's a really drastic change in temps! Maybe it's better for me not to see the really warm days until winter is officially over. I hope your winter hazel blooms for you!

patientgardener - It looks so pretty coming down, but it's still hanging on here. I think we've had plenty this year too!

Karen- I bet you clematis will still bloom. Mine isn't blooming, but I've noticed that the buds continue to grow. I think they'll just be behind.

  26. Catherine, You've just passed one more milestone... We're having some Very Cold temps these days. We will be so appreciative when Spring arrives! :-)
