Snow!

We had to wait a really long time to finally see snow again here.  Last year we had no snow at all which is very unusual.  Normally we get it at least a few times during the winter and then the news teams are out doing live broadcasts and everything is canceled.  Today the kids in our area were already at school when the snow started and I can only imagine how anxious they all are to get out for the day so they can play in the snow.  I get almost as excited as my kids do when it snows.  I've been known to get up during the night and peek out the window to see if it's snowing.

Rose 'Kimberlina' still had quite a few flowers blooming up until today.  In fact we hadn't even really had a frost yet.

The snow really started coming down heavily for awhile.

The pond looks like a big slushee.  Birds have been flying through for a drink at the pond since the birdbaths are frozen.  Hummingbirds are fighting over the feeders.  I'm tempted to buy a couple more to hang out since there have been several of them in our yard and they aren't good about sharing.

It's supposed to get much colder here in the next few days, I'm sure the pond will have a layer of ice over it by then.  I'll leave the waterfall going to keep a hole in the ice.  That will make sure the fish have oxygen and the birds have water.

Yesterday our family drove into the city to Swanson's nursery to visit the reindeer.  We were able to pet them and the Littlest Gardener sat in a small sleigh and had her picture taken with one.  I was surprised at how small they are, no wonder it takes 8 to pull Santa!

Right next door to the reindeer are Curly the camel and Moe the miniature donkey.  They were hilarious together chasing each other around.

Now the Littlest Gardener and I sit inside drinking our hot chocolate while the pumpkin spice candle makes the house smell delicious and are enjoying watching the snow.  Even though this winter is supposed to be cold we just never know when we may see the snow again, so we're enjoying every minute of it.
Right after I published this I looked at my sidebar blogroll of Pacific Northwest garden blogs only to see many of us are posting about snow today.  Guess I wasn't the only one anxious to see snow!

  3. I check for snow in the middle of the night too. I love the stillness it creates when it's falling at night muffling all sounds. And, I love how everything glows outside at night when we get a deep snow.

  4. HI Catherine. It seems so strange to hear you have snow and even before we do here. Wow! I hope there was enough for the girls to at least make some snowballs.
Have a wonderful and Blessed Thanksgiving.

  5. Oh how I wish I could be home taking photos of my snowy plants right now! I will brave the roads a bit early as soon as I finish the pressing things here at the office! I just love the first snow!
Hot toddies and a walk thru the neighborhood are on my to do list tonight!

  6. Your snow photos are lovely. I am thinking the one of the rose is my favorite. What fun for you and your daughter to drink hot chocolate and watch the snow together!

I like snow on the yard, but not in the street. I've watched it snowing at night, too. I like what Gardener on Sherlock Street said.

Do you know about Nancy Bond's First Snowfall Project? Her blog is now Leaping Greenly. You could put a link to this post there if you wanted to.

  7. Catherine, I can't believe you have snow before Chicago! We are having some really bad storms after being in the high 60's today. Your garden looks lovely with the snow and those reindeers, so special.

  8. What a lovely photo of snow on the rose. Here in the mid-west we are having an unusually warm Nov. No frost and no snow. It was in the high 70's yesterday and suppose to continue thru Thanks giving. But I know the snow is coming. Enjoy your winter wonderland.

  9. Hi Catherine we're due for snow later this week aswell but sometimes it's a hit or a miss whether we get it or not. I hope the snow lasts a little while for you to enjoy. That rose picture looks beautiful covered in snow.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving with your loved ones.

  10. We did get more snow here up on the ridge than you did down there. Love the snow on the big sword fern near your pond, and the picture of the snow on the rose. The temp here is up to 34, and there is a little melting going on. You inspire me to make some hot chocolate!

  11. Catherine,

Just a warning of things to come maybe, that snow. Enjoyed the hellebores and fern covered in snow. Our garden had not be hard froze yet either, the banana tree stills stands.

  12. Hi Catherine,
We got hit with about 3 inches of snow this morning too. I'm so glad I don't have to be out in it. It does look pretty though from the warmth of the house. Your garden looks great. Have a great Thanksgiving.
    Blessings,

  13. Catherine I really enjoyed your snow pictures. Your yard is pretty no matter the weather! We rarely get snow, but I do remember times when it was forecast and getting up to peek out the windows. It is always so quiet and so lovely falling in the wee morning hours. You and the Littlest Gardener have the right idea~stay in and watch while enjoying hot chocolate and a pretty candle scent. Your photos from yesterday are really cute too. It's always a pleasure to visit your blog. Enjoy this special week.

  15. Rain, rain, rain here. The snow is supposed to be coming our way but it's been raining cats and dogs all day. Your photos are beautiful.

  16. I get all excited to see snow too, not that we get much of it down here. Love your photos, the garden looks lovely in snow.

  19. It has been warm and mild here today. No snow yet in Ontario. I am hoping it holds off just a bit more- we will see enough of it before winter is done here in Canada. Have a great Thanksgiving.

  20. Oh that snow thing. Well, it is glorious, but for me it all seems alien. I've never really experienced snow, but I love it and want to make snow angels and processions of snowmen.

I've been gardening like a fiend here and loving every second of it. How do your fish fare when the pond slushes with ice?

    Happy Thanksgiving,

  21. Amazing how pretty snow looks in other peoples gardens instead of in mine!! So happy you had enough to stick and make things white.
I bet the hummingbirds would love extra feeders. I place three different ones around my yard (in strategic places ~ so they can't see them from one to another). It's the only way to keep peace!
Enjoy the winter wonderland while it lasts.

  22. Hi Catherine, I was thinking about you today as I heard about the snow and so I ran right over to your blog to see and what a beautiful sight! Your photos are so lovely. I smiled when you talked about getting up in the middle of the night to check for snow. I too have done that maybe it's because it's so rare here in Vegas, but when it's in the forecast I'm like a little excited kid peaking out the window and I love the "hear" the stillness while it's falling! Be safe and warm! Think it will still be there this Friday when I fly in?

  23. Hi Catherine!
I've been visiting your garden for some time and, amongst others, you have been one of the strongest influences to inspire me to start a blog of my own. It's only been a week in the making, but I'm determined to keep it alive. I think your pond and path are absolutely beautiful and it is so exciting to see how everything changes so dramatically, from season to season. I absolutely love your superb photos and reading your delightful posts. Thank you for sharing with all of us!

  24. The first snow is always magic! How nice for your kids to see reel reindeers. That's more than my swedish kids ever had;)
    Take care,

  25. How beautiful! Snow is so pretty especially on laying on plants.

Cute pics of the animals. I didn't know reindeer were small animals.

  26. Your photos are lovely! Sounds like you and your little gardener had a good time drinking hot chocolate and watching the snow. I miss watching the snow fall...however we did get 15 min. of it last winter...:)

  27. Dear Catherine, Oh dear me snow....I wish that I could share your joy at seeing it appear but I am afraid that I do not when I am in the UK. For, in England, as soon as the tiniest flurry appears everything [and I mean everything] grinds to a halt and before one can blink everything has turned to a grey slush. In Budapest.....that is another matter entirely!!

  28. I love the snow so much that I moved to a sub-tropical island. But I love the snow... really I do.

  29. Your snow rose picture is better than mine, but the one I adore is the 2nd pic of the bird house framed by the tree limbs in the falling snow. Magical.

  31. Amazing! Hard to believe that you hadn't had a frost yet -- then a snowfall! Your rose photo is stunning. Think it is going to be a crazy winter.

  32. Hi Catherine, your garden looks lovely in the snow. I'm a fan of snow when I don't have to go anywhere. A friend told me today that there is snow here in Italy already but to me it still feels really mild. We're having amazing thunder and lightning and rain, rain, and more rain. Christina

  34. Even snowier today and very cold!

Becca - I think the snow will be gone by the weekend, although they are now talking about snow on Thanksgiving.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Glad it isnt just here that loses the plot when it snows. They have predicted some snow this weekend but I really dont think it is cold enough Well I hope it isnt as whilst the snow is nice to look at it is a pain when you have to get to work etc.

How come you still have hummingbirds, I thought they were migrant birds and would have moved south?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Helen - The Anna's hummingbird is a year round bird here. The Rufous hummingbirds do go south for the winter. If we leave feeders up the Anna's will stay in the garden all winter.
