It's Fall for the Fairies.

I just never know for sure goes on in my garden when I'm not looking. Tools disappear, seeds sprout where I didn't plant them or plants that I thought were dying suddenly appear to be coming back to life. Are there garden fairies at work?

I noticed these mushrooms in our grass yesterday. They look like a miniature mushroom forest, perfect for fairies to hide in.

I'm not sure if this would be considered a fairy ring, but it is interesting to see they are growing in a circle. Celtic folklore says fairy rings are created by fairies dancing at night. It's kind of fun to imagine that fairies were dancing in our yard.

Maybe they wore dresses made of fuchsia flowers?

I know fairies just might be living in our garden. We've see signs of them. Sweet Pea has built them several homes throughout the backyard. This is part of the village she made for them under the Japanese Maple tree. We noticed that fall has come to the fairy village.

The leaves on their tree have turned a brilliant orange.

They've emptied out their plant pots. Cedar needles and leaves have covered the ground.

They've been collecting acorns and chestnuts too. Sweet Pea said they use the nut halves as cooking pots. I hope the squirrels don't discover them, or perhaps the fairies took them from the squirrels?

I'd love to wake up one morning and find that instead of dancing, the fairies planted all my bulbs and cleaned up all the Cedar needles. Then I know I'd believe in them!

  1. What a charming post! There's so much buzz about planting pollinator and wildlife gardens, this is a good reminder that fairies need a place to hang out, too :-)

  2. Good Morning Catherine, What a delightful post and such pretty pictures today. It brings back memories of being about Sweet Pea's age and being low enough to the ground to imagine fairies living amongst the clover (here in the South!) I like her idea of acorn pots and I'm with you; those fairies need to learn how to plant those bulbs! Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Enjoy your day.

  3. What a wonderful posting. I could believe they would love a house and garden that Sweetpea made.Faeries need shelter and umbrella's too.You could imagine all the little toadstools as umbrella's.

  4. Your mushrooms are cute and dainty; the ones in my lawn are brawny and fat. Maybe we have mini ogres around here?!
This year my littlest gardener loved picking peas and eating them while playing outside. Last month I noticed little pea plants sprouting all over the lawn. Not the work of fairies, just the result of my little one's slippery fingers.

  6. Hi Catherine. I agree. Charming as the elusive fairies are, it only seems fair that they should pay "rent" if they want to hang in our backyards. Especially if their caretakers are as loving as Sweet Pea is with her ready made villages. I think the mushrooms are a cheerful start. Wouldn't it be cool if they were like the Keebler elves: "Now everyone grab one leaf and let's march to the compost pile. Ready? Go." Wake up every morning to a pristine garden. Miracles do happen. :)

  8. Mushrooms are always a mystery. I like the circular line up. I really appreciated your daughter's creativity with the fairy houses. Have you ever seen the movie called Fairies? It is a story about a man that photographed them. Really nice photos of color.

  9. Hmmm, now wouldn't that be nice to have the fairies plant your bulbs. Perhaps you can ask Sweet Pea to pass along the wish to them and you never know, it might just come true:)

  11. I think that Sweet Pea has provided the fairies with a quite magical palace. You must go out into the garden when the moon is bright and softly utter Peter Pan's words "I do believe in fairies, I do, I do". Those bulbs will get planted and the cedar needles will be swept away before dawn breaks :)

  14. My goodness Catherine !
    I love those mushrooms : )
I get "ink caps" ? I think Wiseacre called them .. not at all delicate looking and they literally EXPLODE .. not a pretty picture and sort of scary .. but that is a good thing in October, helps set the mood for Halloween !
I love the fairy house .. I wonder if I have TROLLS living in my garden instead of fairies .. I have a feeling that is the case .. something keeps bending my trowels in weird shapes ? haha
Gorgeous pictures and the leaves are PERFECT !!
    Joy : )
PS can you have your fairies kick out my trolls please ? hehehehe

  17. I love that first shot. That is really beautiful.

The fairies in my garden don't have nearly as nice of accomodations as yours do. :)

  18. A pepper plant makes a nice 'tree' for a fairy garden. I love your mushrooms, I hadn't realized that we don't have any until I saw yours.

    Love this post.

  24. Catherine: I found this source for miniature garden supplies and thought your littlest gardener might like some of these items in her fairy garden. Here is the link. http://miniaturegardenshoppe.com/content.html

  25. Oh what a treat this post was to read. I smiled the whole time. You made me see the fairies at work in your garden tending to their own. I agree with you however. Until these slackers start planting some spring bulbs they're on their own.

Oh by the way, I really appreciate what you must have had to do to get that eye level shot of the shrooms. It was worth it. ;-)

  26. Such a delightful post and so pleased you bring your girls up helping the fairies. We always had a fairy seat under an old apple tree. Now 25 years later my eldest still loves anything about fairies.
