Fall Color in the Puget Sound area.

I've been patiently waiting for my favorite Japanese Maple to finish changing into it's most beautiful fall colors. It seems to start overnight and then quickly turn golden yellow right before the leaves begin falling. I noticed this year that the Japanese Maples in my yard seemed to change in sections. One part would be red while the lower branches were still covered in bright green leaves. I'm not sure if it is caused by weather or the amount of sun they got, but it does seem strange this year.

In order to get a picture of the top of the tree I actually had to go to the front yard to take the picture. You can see just how tall this unknown Japanese Maple is here. Our home is a one story and the tree goes far above the roof line. I think because this part of the tree gets the most sun the top leaves turn this beautiful orange color. The bright red leaves to the left are from Japanese Maple 'Orido Nishiki'.

I was able to get most of the tree in this picture in the backyard. It practically glows with all the golden leaves.

The trunks and branches of this tree are covered in lichen and moss which adds to its beauty. The leaves on this part of the tree are a rusty yellow.

I love the yellow ceiling in this part of the yard. The branches are just thick with leaves.

And now the leaves are slowly falling to reveal the first blue sky I've seen here in days. Soon our deck will be covered in leaves, and the sweeping and raking will begin.

  1. Wow, those are gorgeous trees. Yes, fall color (much like spring blossoms) only lasts a short time, but I think that's what makes it so special! I love fall!

  5. How very beautiful and colorful Catherine. We had heavy downpours of rain yesterday and the leaves are stuck to the drive and our deck - what a mess! I'm hoping for some wind to dry everything out!

It seems to me that they are very old Japanese Maples, aren´t they?
Maybe not, I say this becuase my trees are not that tall after 10 years old.

  15. Such intense colour! Im so jealous-Japanese maples will not withstand our easterly winds here in the winter-they just scorch and burn, then die .But Im so grateful to be able to see your wonderful foliage. Marvellous pictures Catherine.

  18. I can't believe that you Japanese Maples are that big! Just beautiful. Not quite fall in S. CA, although it was cool enough today....maybe the trees will start to change.

  19. Such beautiful fall colors right there in your yard. Our trees are pretty small yet, but I still love the little spots of fall color they provide. You're right, that hike was a bit scary, but exhilerating. That's why we were so proud of ourselves, not to mention us being over 50 and hubby just having heart surgery three months ago!

  21. Fall colors are in full swing in your area and your yard. I don't know why your tree changed colors in sections. That's interesting. I love your photos!

I've been noticing different plants are at their peaks at different times, and have been taking photos on different days. At some point, I need to go ahead and do a post. I don't think I participated last year.

  23. Hi Catherine~~ I love the blue sky behind the golden foliage and jet-black branches. I'll have to observe mine a little closer to see if they're coloring varies. I find Japanese maple leaves so much easier to clean up than my Sweet Gum leaves. Let the raking begin... soon anyway.

  26. Japanese Maple is one of my favorite trees. And this is only because of the colours of the leaves, not only in autumn, but all year.
    Great pictures!

  32. Wow, what great fall color! And your Japanese maples are so BIG. I'm glad you're getting some blue sky. Your clouds must have made their way over here. We've had a bit of snow today, though it didn't stick.

  40. These colors just POP! It's nice to have that color in your own yard. We have lots of older trees in our yard--both front and back--and none of them were a bit eye-appealing this year. I literally had to walk around the neighborhood to see the colors. My yard doesn't get enough sun, I think, so that might be why the leaves looked really dull here. It's funny, when I walked off my property and down the street, the colors were amazing;-)
