The pond in September.

While the weekend was fairly busy, I couldn't resist taking the time to take some pictures of how the pond and surrounding areas are looking right now.  The lighting was so pretty and I love how this time of year the reflections of plants and trees can be seen in the pond.

This time of year is one of my favorites around the pond.   It has such a tranquil feeling about it.  I think it's prettier now with less blooming, although I'm sure next summer I'll think differently.  For some year round color I'm going to paint the wood trellis on the fence a nice deep purple.  I got the inspiration from the header picture on Grace's blog, although her's is (surprise)... pink!  Now we just need some dry weather so I can to work on it.

The water lilies were sparse this year, but it's nice to still have one or two blooming now.

The colors this time of year are so much sharper and clear.  The Japanese Blood grass which you can see at the right corner is going to be so pretty as it continues to fill in.  I like how the red of fuchsia picks up the color in the grass.

I'm glad I decided to plant small Daylilies above the waterfall.  I had wanted grasses, but couldn't find any that really would work here.  Now I get to have flowers and their grass like foliage once they are done blooming.

The shed garden keeps filling in.  I plan to add lots of bulbs here this fall.  They're waiting inside the shed to be planted.

The American Beautyberry bush 'Profusion', which is planted behind the pond, berries have started turning purple.  I planted this last fall after seeing it on so many blogs.  It's done really well in it's part sun location.

As I was driving around yesterday I noticed that some trees are starting to change colors and some are dropping their leaves already.  I think I'll start pulling the fall decorations out this weekend.  I usually have a hard time letting myself do that because it means summer is really over, but this year there's no doubt that fall has arrived already.

  2. Hi Catherine ~ I love your gardens year round, and the pond with the reflections is very restful. I look forward to seeing your purple fencing. Color in different mediums adds to a garden I think.

Even down here we can feel fall coming. I love the lighting this time of year, although I won't like it when they change the clock again and it will be dark early.

Have a great week ~ FlowerLady

  4. Catherine, love the little fall leaves crawling across your blog. Of course my favorite part of your garden is that pond, always inviting and the pond lily is beautiful. We are getting a lot of dried up looking leaves falling off the trees. I hope they are not in danger because of the heat we have had.

  7. Beautiful as always Catherine. The shed garden really is looking nice.

I've noticed some of our leaves falling off too. However, I think it is from our hot, dry summer.

  8. Hi Catherine. Your pond looks lovely. I love how your Fuchsia is getting so big and it spills into the edge of the pond.
I planted a Beauty Berry bush this spring too but no berries.Maybe next year when it gets a little bigger. The lily foliage looks pretty around your pond.
I finally broke down and put up a few Fall decorations on the porch and the scarecrow and mums out in front of the garage today. My garden is getting so full I cannot get the scarecrow in it anymore. LOL!
    Have a wonderful week!

  9. Nice new look to the blog. I am still debating if I'll change mine as I usually do on my blogiversary. Love the pond. The reflection in the sky is wonderful. It is definitely a time to reflect for me. And time to get those fall decorations out:)

  10. I always love seeing pictures of your pond! It's looking good. Is that a sword fern planted at the back near the waterfall? The shed garden is looking good too, I'm wondering what bulbs you are going to plant?

  11. Catherine, your pond is looking very beautiful now. I like the colour of your water lily. Some times, less flowers give a feeling of calmness.

  14. Alison - Hi! It's a Japanese Tassel fern by the pond. It's evergreen and has done really well there. I do have a sword fern in another part of the garden and they do look similar. So far I've got tulips and daffodils, but I'm thinking about snowdrops too for that area.

  16. Catherine, your yard still looks beautiful and untouched by autumn. Leaves are turning and the ash trees leaves are starting to fall. Frost has deflated one hydrangea and my magnolia. zone 3 Edmonton, Canada

  19. Dear Catherine, As you say, the pond garden does take on a serenity at this time of year that makes it look quite different from the rest of the year. The lengthening shadows on the water and the burnished tints of plants just turning make it look very pretty indeed.

I think that it is a wonderful idea to paint the fence and trellis and purple sounds a good choice. I think that it will set off the planting very well.

  20. What is finny is that you are waiting for dry days to paint while I'm waiting for the dry days to get over with! Your pond looks very good still in September.

  21. I can't remember where I followed a link from to your blog, but I'm glad I did. Your garden is beautiful and I have had a lovely half hour scrolling back through your older posts.
How many hours would you spend in your garden each week, on average?

  22. Is it the heat that just makes things seem louder? Because for some reason when you said the pond seems so tranquil I thought it seems that way around here too. I think it's a quiet/peaceful season if that makes any sense.
Love the clouds and trees in the pond.

  23. Now doesn't that fall sidebar look wonderful here! I do like your pond this time of year. It's especially vibrant and pretty now. I've got to plant some daylilies! I think painting the trellis would give great contrast.

  25. Catherine, Your pond and your garden still look stunning. I really enjoy my beautyberry; it's only one year old and really flourishing and I trust yours will do the same. I always enjoy my visits to your blog; such beauty! Did you ever get any ripe tomatoes? Lots of people in my area (Iowa) said they didn't get any, or at least not many. I planted 30 plants and had some rotting on the vine. I'm ashamed to say that given that someone would have enjoyed them, but I just couldn't get out and pick frequently enough. It's turned cooler now and I don't think we'll pick many more. Have a great week!

  26. Your gardens are holding their own. We are at a point that I need to remove the foliage to get ready for fall. I have so few things blooming now. Trees have not started to change at all but it doesn't take it long to get going. Beautiful pond.

  29. Hi Catherine, I used spray paint. Here's to a rain and wind-free summer-ish day to get 'er done. Thank you for the link-love.

Your pond is absolutely beautiful and you're so right about the slanted light of this time of year. I love how the fuchsias just keep on blooming this time of year. Between them and the Salvias it's, well, like summer. :)

  33. Gorgeous, gorgeous photos of your pond Catherine. I can see why you think it looks so good this time of year ~ it really does. I always love seeing photos of it. I don't think I have a favorite season ~ it brings so much to your garden year around. The fuchsias are beautiful and I think purple on your fence will be eye-popping! :-)
Sorry I haven't been around much ~ I'm trying to do better!

  36. That pond is looking beutiful Catherine! I love the idea of painting the trellis a nice bright shade - I'm still trying to convince my husband that it's a good idea, but he is of the stock who believe that green and brown are the only colours that belong on a garden fence. the heathen!

  42. You have lots of interest in your garden still, and good colour around your pond. Like others have mentioned, that shot of the waterlily flower with the cloud reflection around it is terrific.

My bags of bulbs are helping me think of spring, as the fall colours transform the garden.

  43. Hi! You have nice photos. I love the flowers. They are georgeous. I have been wanting me a little pond with Koi and water lilies and my hubby likes the Koi(fish) that are red and white. Your pond is nice. I also like the fushcia and the flowers, they are so pretty. The little ceramic frog is cute he looks like he is ready to jump in. We have a little bullfrog that has been sticking around the backdoor. He hides in BoBos doggiebed and comes out. One day he jummped in his bowl. It is hilarious at our house. These animals bring alot of laughter! Talk to you later. kim sillshill.blogspot

I like the red blood grass as well.
Yes" fall has found it's way around here in my neck of the woods.. I thought I was going to ignore it until the weather dropped way down into the 50's Brrrr!

I think I'll too" find something pretty and fallish to decorate my home and put myself into a happy cozy mood.

    Have a wonderful evening.
