Sunflowers and moon.

I've had some good luck with Sunflowers this year.  Between the ones we planted and the ones the birds planted they are popping up all over the place.  I don't know that I ever fully appreciated them before like I do this year.  I didn't realize just how popular they are with the honeybees either.

This is 'Mammoth', the ones I planted in this area didn't get as tall as the ones planted in the front yard.  These are all at least 8 feet tall though.

As I was taking pictures I realized that the moon was right over the Sunflower, I thought it was really neat looking.  Here the focus was on the flower.

In this picture I put the focus on the moon.

I couldn't figure out how to have the moon and Sunflower both show clearly in a picture, so I decided just to take a picture of the moon.

This very tall Sunflower is courtesy of the birds at the bird feeder.  They are popping up everywhere.  It's probably 8 or 9 feet tall which is impressive for a birdseed one, they usually only get a few feet tall.

There's something about the sun shining through the petals that just makes it even prettier to me.

The sun is making a return here this week along with some warmer weather and I just can't wait to get out in the garden again.

  3. Such gorgeous pictures Catherine. I love the light coming thru the petals too. Awesome that the moon was out while you were photographing. Thanks for such a unique perspective on sunflowers; I don't know that I've ever seen any this tall before.

  5. The blue of the sky with the yellow of the sunflower in just beautiful.....the moon is a hard one for me..you did a wonderful job. The squirrels eat my sunflowers before I can truly enjoy them....seriously, they cut the stem and drag the entire bloom!

  9. Love the sunflower pictures. I find myself planting more each year. Wayne made a late planting of them and they are all the red ones (which we love). I would like to try some orangey ones next year.

I have never grown sunflowers before, are they hard to grow? Should I sow the seeds now in the north or wait until spring up here?

  17. Nothing better than a big old bright sunflower and the moon makes it look very harvesty. That would be a tricky shot to get both in focus.
