I've had some good luck with Sunflowers this year. Between the ones we planted and the ones the birds planted they are popping up all over the place. I don't know that I ever fully appreciated them before like I do this year. I didn't realize just how popular they are with the honeybees either.
This is 'Mammoth', the ones I planted in this area didn't get as tall as the ones planted in the front yard. These are all at least 8 feet tall though.
As I was taking pictures I realized that the moon was right over the Sunflower, I thought it was really neat looking. Here the focus was on the flower.
In this picture I put the focus on the moon.
I couldn't figure out how to have the moon and Sunflower both show clearly in a picture, so I decided just to take a picture of the moon.
This very tall Sunflower is courtesy of the birds at the bird feeder. They are popping up everywhere. It's probably 8 or 9 feet tall which is impressive for a birdseed one, they usually only get a few feet tall.
There's something about the sun shining through the petals that just makes it even prettier to me.
The sun is making a return here this week along with some warmer weather and I just can't wait to get out in the garden again.
These are just my favourite flowers!! Lovely pix!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous sunflowers! It brightens up my day just seeing a healthy strong stalk of sunflowers. I really loved the second to the last picture you took! Your sunflowers are mammoth!
ReplyDeleteSuch gorgeous pictures Catherine. I love the light coming thru the petals too. Awesome that the moon was out while you were photographing. Thanks for such a unique perspective on sunflowers; I don't know that I've ever seen any this tall before.
ReplyDeleteThat second photo is too splendid for words. I have no luck with tall sunflowers-sure wish I could grow em like this!
ReplyDeleteThe blue of the sky with the yellow of the sunflower in just beautiful.....the moon is a hard one for me..you did a wonderful job. The squirrels eat my sunflowers before I can truly enjoy them....seriously, they cut the stem and drag the entire bloom!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! I love the light shining through too, and the moon adds a magical feel!
ReplyDeleteSunflowers are so cheery. Wish the birds would have planted some for us.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but smile every time I see a sunflower. The like the light shining through the flower, too. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteLove the sunflower pictures. I find myself planting more each year. Wayne made a late planting of them and they are all the red ones (which we love). I would like to try some orangey ones next year.
ReplyDeleteThe sunflower yellow is even more cheery against a brilliant blue sky. Lovely pictures.
ReplyDeleteThe sun coming through the petals makes the picture very special!
ReplyDeleteToday I noticed that there are wild sunflowers blooming everywhere here in Oklahoma so your post really caught my eye. You take lovely pictures and grow beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteI've never planted them, but you've given me the itch! Just stunning!!
ReplyDeleteGreat shots. I liked how you took it from side view. The are very dimensional photos. Your moon looks just like ours, huh?
ReplyDeleteI really liked these shots.
ReplyDeleteI have never grown sunflowers before, are they hard to grow? Should I sow the seeds now in the north or wait until spring up here?
Those are so pretty Catherine! I like yellows and blues together.
ReplyDeleteWe noticed the moon at work today too. It was so pretty.
Nothing better than a big old bright sunflower and the moon makes it look very harvesty. That would be a tricky shot to get both in focus.
ReplyDeleteHi Catherine~~ Beautiful sunflowers!! And nice weather to enjoy them. I just knew summer wasn't finished yet. :]
ReplyDeleteAlways love the sunflowers ! They are so cheerful. Gosh, they are so tall - almost touching the sky!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThey are "you make me happy" flowers! I haven't got any this year and I reallu miss them. I love when all the small birds sits there and eat those seeds late in the summer. That picture with the moon and the sunflower was great! / gittan
ReplyDeleteI just love sunflowers; so simple and yet so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow Catherine, those are some amazing captures of the sunflowers, sky and moon! We can't even grow sunflowers here hardly at all and never ever that tall! I could study your photos for hours! :-)
