Fall inspiration and a special day.

Yesterday the Littlest Gardener and I went in search of fall inspiration at my favorite local nursery.  I hadn't been there in awhile and with not having much time to garden lately I felt the need to see some plants.  I went looking for some ideas for the area in my backyard I'm planning to work on, as well as some container plants.

I've had a bit of an addiction to Heucheras this summer.  I have lost count of how many I've bought.  These were in 4 inch pots which made them a little cheaper.

There were so many tables of Pansies.  They do great here in the winter and last year bloomed right through the snow.  Peoples carts were overflowing with these.

I like how they have big tables full of different ideas for combinations.

I love all these colors!

Talk about some pretty fall color on this Sumac 'Tiger Eyes'.  I'd love to try one, but have read they send up suckers like crazy.  Maybe a large container?

A few things I found.  Carex 'Prairie Fire' which has a subtle orange color when held against orangey toned flowers, Carex 'Leatherleaf Sedge' a brownish color and Japanese Blood Grass 'Red Baron'.

Heuchera 'Blackcurrant' to add to a container.

The Littlest Gardener's Pansy with the pretty ruffled edges.  She wanted purple Pansies for her garden.

The reason for today being so special?  The Littlest Gardener turns 3!!!  We waited 8 years for her to be born, something I had given up would happen.  My husband and I had submitted all of our paperwork to China (a very long and official process) only to find out I was pregnant right after the paperwork got there.  It's amazing that after 8 long years of waiting for her that the past 3 have flown by so quickly.

Looks like a great nursery. I just got an email from Flower World about their fall sale. Think I need to make another trip up north? LOL
Well, I know one thing - you just made me want to go to a nursery so I think I'm outta here to go somewhere fun - since the places I've been having to go to lately haven't been! Thanks Catherine, I'm going to forget everything for a few and head to a nursery - right now!!!

  7. I have had a heuchera addiction too! We need to start a group. We have planted them over the years. We got lucky this summer though...we were at Lowe's one day and they had large ones on clearance. I bought some for $2.00...went back to get more and they rang up for $1.00! I was doing a happy dance. :)

With the love for blue the blue ruffling pansy is beautiful. I love to see the table full of lovely pansies.
I am not safe going to look at a nursery because of all of the plants I have bought for fall planting ;-)
And still I want a few more new mums for fall decorating.
The heuchera " Petticoat Ruffles' (I think) is a beautiful one. Deep purple and leaves like a begonia. There are so many pretty ones now to choose from.
Your new grasses will be beautiful for fall.

  21. Happy birthday to your beautiful doughter! She was worth waiting for I believe. Think twice about that Sumac! I don't know if you read my post about how bad those suckers had spread when we desided to digg the whole tree/shrub up. Planted in a large container I think it'll look nice and then there's no trubbel. Such nice plants you bought. I do love Heucheras and grass to. Have a nice day / gittan

  28. Happy Birthday Littlest Gardener!!

I know just how you feel Catherine- nearly five years of heartbreak divided the birth of my daughter from the birth of my son. But you know- the rewards of bringing up a much wanted family whatever the age gap are worth it all in the end;-)

    Love to you all from

    Julie

  31. What a beautiful story about your little girls birthday. It's amazing how things happen, isn't it? I'm sure she is that much more precious because of the wait. Hope she had a fantastic third birthday.
Your trip to the nursery makes me want to take one too. I really think I'd like to try some fall containers since my summer ones kind of fizzled.
