The plants don't mind the snow.

This has been a rather strange end of winter.  It seems to have gotten more and more winter like now that spring is almost here.  I think we've had more snow in the last week or so than we've had for the whole winter.  But, after many, many days of gloomy rain I really enjoyed seeing the snow.  At least it's pretty to look at and it wasn't enough to cause any problems getting around.  Today as I walked around the yard I noticed that the snow doesn't seem to be slowing any of the plants down, if anything most have really taken off growing.

Helleobore Winter Jewels 'Cherry Blossom' has settled in really well and has lots of flowers.

The fish were swimming around and enjoying the sun.  Hard to believe that a few hours before there was snow on the ground!

Bulbs are popping up everywhere.  Tete-a-tetes are beginning to bloom and the squirrels haven't found these Crocuses yet.  That ball of roots is a Hosta looking for a new home.  It's even started growing!

Spring is prime time in most of the backyard.  Things are really waking up.

Ribes sanguineum flowerbuds are so close to opening.

Two falls ago I planted 3 Fritillaria bulbs.  I was excited to see how many are coming up this year.

Hellebore 'Mardi Gras Double' surrounded by wood sorrel and a Western Sword Fern.

I found Epimedium 'Elfin Pink' blooming already!

The path garden lit up by the sun.

And a walk out to the front yard reminds you that it did really snow last night.  But even out there the plants seem happy and ready for spring.

The weather this winter reminds me of the one we had a few years ago which was followed by a record breaking hot summer.  Either way, the plants don't seem bothered by it and really it is so pretty it's hard complain when it's followed by blue skies and sun.

  1. Your plants are looking good, I think they actually liked this weird weather. We had a dusting of snow here too. Your Hellebores are looking so good, and I love that your three Fritillarias have increased so well.

  5. I love your Hellebores :) After the previously soggy, late, summer we had, I could go for a hot one this year :) I can feel that satisfaction you must have in seeing your plants mature and expand. Your gardens are lush and full. I'm hopefully for a warm spring despite these wacky late snows. Cheers, Jenni

  11. The whole garden looks so happy. Love that Mardi Gras Hellebore. It wasn't until the last picture that I even believed that it snowed recently. It all looks so bright and sunny. Super jealous that your Tete-a-Tete is getting ready to bloom. Maybe mine aren't doing well....??

  12. Hi Catherine, your garden certainly looks happy despite the snow. I love, love, love the Hellebore 'Mardi Gras Double'. It is soo... beautiful with the sun rays hitting it. I think all the spring bulbs that you have planted make your garden very exciting at this time of the year. I should follow your example. So far I only have gladioli in the front yard and they are coming out already. They also have multiplied, too, so satisfying to see that.

  13. Your garden is such a magical, exciting place and when it wakes up after the wintry months, it's truly a place of beauty. You really do have one of the loveliest gardens anywhere, Catherine! I get garden envy when I visit and marvel, always, at how many different plants you have incorporated into your beds and I am always amazed at how everything always seems to thrive! You put in a lot of hard work, I know, but I also think you are truly blessed with that proverbial green thumb.

  19. Hi,

It's been a strange winter here too with only a few frosts so far and thankfully, barely any snow.
Glad to see your garden is waking up, and I'm surprised that despite the snow you have had, many of the plants are already blooming! We had an early start but now seem to be lagging behind!

  20. I SO hope you're wrong about the record-hot summer. Your garden looks gorgeous. I love the blue sky reflecting on your pond's surface. I wish I still had a Ribes. Mine kicked the bucket. Lots of sunshine here today. I saw that it's supposed to be 62 degrees tomorrow in Portland. Nice!

  21. Hello I thought I would pop in and say what pretty pictures and your little dog Gracie is adorable. I cant wait for the weather to warm up here and the clocks to change so we can spend the evenings in the garden too. Please visit me sometime in the orchard. Have good times. I am your newest member.

  22. Spring really has paid you a nice visit with the blooms. I am in belief we are going to have a record summer too. We have been having alternating 60° weather with 25° weather, but our plants are still not up and blooming. The snows have kept them down below. Good for them too, I would not come out either. I checked the koi pod at the farm yesterday and they were deep in the pond. Seems like plants and animals know much better than us what might be in store.

  24. How amazing these flowers could be. I also like the structure of your garden with the fish pool in the center which makes it more refreshing to watch. Anyway, do you have an idea on what specific butterflies do the cherry blossoms' attract?

  26. Hi there, Yes, it is funny how sometimes snow seems to be an insulator for plants. I guess if it doesn't stick around too long. Your 'Cherry Blossom' is so beautiful and I hope I can find one over here. We finally had some near 60 days and I found a bloom. Yay!
