Painting and raining.

We've been quite busy finishing up painting the garden shed. My husband built a little "deck" for the front of it and I can't wait to show pictures of the whole thing finished. Unfortunately the weather for the last week or so hasn't been too cooperative with getting the painting finished. I realize as I've been up on the ladder in the cold weather between rain and wind how much I really don't enjoy painting, to me it's right up there with ironing. I'm sure it's possible that if the weather was sunny and warm it wouldn't seem quite as bad. But while outside doing what to me is a monotonous job I took a few minutes here and there to admire the view from on top of the ladder and to realize that a pair of Chickadees seemed to have picked the pond birdhouse to build a nest in.

Any break in the clouds and rain is welcome and everything seems to look a little bit more colorful and bright.

When I planted this Heuchera I forgot that these tulips were here. I doubt I could've planned it any better!

My girls are out on Spring Break this week so between finishing painting and having some fun with them I won't be around a whole lot to visit other blogs, but I will try to catch up as soon as I can. I'm anxious to see what the weather is like other places (hopefully better than ours), what projects everyone has been up to and what has started blooming.

  1. It is all so beautiful. I won't see my tulips for a few weeks. Your pond looks really good and birds in the birdhouse, that is great!

  2. The pond is looking good, and that Heuchera with the tulips is a wonderful accidental combo.

I just noticed it looks like you have a vine growing up the post that holds your pond birdhouse, what vine is it?

  3. Everything looks beautiful around the pond Catherine. I love tulips and the heuchera is so bright. Can't wait to see your finished garden shed. Hope you and the girls have a wonderful spring break. The last few days, we have had warm sun and lots of blooms are popping out!

  5. Your garden looks so lovely. I can sympathize with the rain. It's been rather soggy here for most of the last week. It's looking up though, and we should see some warm sunshine soon!

  6. The garden around the pond just sparkles. Glad you got some chickadees to move into you birdhouse. I knew something would take the offer for free rent and board. LOL! I am eager to see your new shed. Have a fun week with the girls.

  7. I feel your pain! It is taking forever and a day to get my own shed painted! I finally paid the teenager across the street to finish it tomorrow!

  10. Catherine,
I'm not a big fan of painting, but being a handyman you need to do it some time. I'l trade our 90 degree heat for your cold and raining anytime. Slave to the water hose the past week+

  11. How inviting & colorful your garden ...

Hope you had a wonderful & joyful Easter.

    Have a beautiful week.

  12. It all looks lovely. I can understand how painting would not be enjoyable in the cold and the rain. We could actually use a little rain here at the moment. We haven't had any in over a week and the weatherman keeps teasing us with a 40% chance, only to have it stay north of here.

  13. Catherine, your pond is breathtaking! YOU are enjoying a wonderful Spring. :-)

  14. Hi Catherine, everything looks beautiful - I'm looking forward to seeing you shed. I've been also painting my little house. Just saw my first flower yesterday.

  15. Beautiful pond and garden...I hope you have a wonderful time with the girls. The weather here is going to rain for a few days, this enables me to return to the quilt room and finish up some UFO's. Take care.

  16. Hi Catherine, Your garden looks so cheery! Glad the sun came out. I am looking forward to seeing the shed and its deck. Sounds like a nice place for some pots.

Guess what I FINALLY did? Finished building a platform for my dahlias; which, I'm proud to say are all planted. Now just looking for them to grow and shine. Thanks again!

Have fun on spring break! It is a busy time of the year no doubt.

  17. I suppose we had it coming considering the wonderful weather we had been getting. sigh. Your tulips are lovely. This is the first time I think I have seen your pond bird house. It's wonderful and so perfect that you have chickadees nesting. Last year we were blessed with green violet swallows nesting in the garage roof. That's made me feel like our garden had been nature approved. It must have been a wonderful treat to see those chickadees nesting in your garden. :-)

  19. Hi Catherine~~ I LOVE the serendipitous companion planting of the Heuchera and tulips. Your pond shots are just delightful.

To tell you the truth, I'd rather IRON than paint. I love the results of painting but I'm really messy and I don't relish the task itself or the clean up.

I'm sorry your schools chose this week for spring break with such sucky weather. But I'm sure you'll have fun.

  20. Dear Catherine, Painting is a very tedious chore but it does have its rewards - in this instance the view from the top of the ladder where your pond garden is looking simply wonderful. And I do agree, the combination of tulip and Heuchera is superb.

I do hope that you have a happy break with your children this week and that the weather holds up for you.

  21. Thank you everyone for stopping by and visiting! After my post today I went back outside and just about finished the painting... Hooray!

Alison - That vine on the birdhouse post is Clematis 'Ville de Lyon'. It's one of my favorites and grows like crazy every year.

  22. What wonderful colours! This is what I noticed in the Pacific West gardens that I visited. Although our climates are identical, you have so much more light because you are at a lower lattitude. London is probably at the same latitude as Alaska! but warmed by the gulf stream.

  23. I just now saw these beauties from Holland over at Phillip's Dirt Therapy and here! Double treat! The Heucheras have blended nicely with the tulips. Your Pond seems to be coming alive! Have fun!

  24. Your pond photo with the Heuchera and tulips is as pretty as a postcard.

I've been on a blogging break, too. Hope I haven't missed too much.

  25. Catherine girl it looks gorgeous over at your garden !
The planting .. well I think we do a lot of it subconciously (spelling .. early morning more coffee NEEDED!) .. I know I have grouped plants together that I thought I didn't really "plan" but they were perfect .. it is the innate gardener taking over ? LOL
We have shifted from sunny and hot to cloudy and rain almost ? it is coming ! LOL

    Beautiful pictures : )

  26. I can't believe I never noticed that tall birdhouse at the base of your pond. Maybe just never saw it all in one shot. My little chickadees keep chasing wasps away when they fly anywhere near their nest house. It's so funny to watch a little bird chase a wasp! I see your NWF sign on the fence. Proud like me, I'm sure, to be able to display it. Have a good week with the kids!

  27. Stunning tulips Catherine!! I really like this perspective you took these pictures from, I don't think I've seen the pond from this angle before. Lovely. :) Rebecca

  28. Kudos on finishing the painting!! It's something you have to be in the mood to do. Great garden photos.

  29. Yay! So glad the chickadees decided to nest in your yard. You were worried about that after the bees took over. I would nest there too with a view like they have!! It's just gorgeous. Love the pond with the tulips in bloom.
I hope you get more decent weather than you think. It's always such a let down to be off and then not have it be nice. Good luck with the painting too & happy spring break with your girls!

  30. Your pond looks so delightful with all of those spots of bright color around it. The combination of those tulips and Heuchera is brilliant.

We're having the opposite weather: sunny and hot. It's supposed to be low '90's today.

  31. What a lovely garden you have! I love those colours. They could brighten up any grouchy soul!

  32. Your pond is looking very pretty. We had snow yesterday but tomorrow looks to be quite nice.
I hate to paint too. It's just nice to see the results.

  33. Your garden looks lovely! As for painting, I actually like it, especially if I can use lots of color. But then, I suppose that's because I'm an artist who paints and applying color is what it's all about. Of course the best part is standing back and enjoying your work when you're done. Which you'll be able to do as soon as the shed is all done!

  34. Hi Catherine. Great tulips. They don't grow here .. so I'll have to enjoy yours, or move to Holland.

  35. My kids are on spring break this week too. Catherine, I adore your pond! The transformation for your winter pond to your spring pond is amazing! Happy fishing and painting!

  37. I don't think that our weather is any better than yours Catherine but it should improve as the week progresses :) Hope that the painting goes smoothly and that you enjoy the extra time with your girls.

  39. Back again. Thought about you yesterday when Phillip and I were out in the backyard. We looked up and saw a pileated woodpecker high up in the tree. We barely got a look and it took off.

I don't think I was clear in my post that included info about maple syrup. Wisconsin is not THE leading producer, but A leading producer. Fourth, I think, behind VT, NH and NY.

Hey, it's raining here today also and the weather people are talking about snow later in the week.
