April monthly garden bouquet.

I'm joining in with Noelle of Ramblings from a Desert Garden again for the April monthly garden bouquet. She started this fun idea a few months ago and she invites us to create a bouquet from our garden during the third week of each month.
This month was a little difficult because most of the flowers blooming now are small and I just can't bring myself to cut a tulip or a daffodil. So, I decided to try and create a color theme this time and focused on blue and white with a little green thrown in for good measure.

I've got more Spanish Bluebells than anything, but it looked kind of boring with too many of them. The Navelwort (Omphalodes cappadocica) 'Starry Eyes' is still blooming as is the White Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis).

Ferns, Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum), Forget-me-nots (Myosotis) and Columbines (Aquilegia) make up the rest of the bouquet.

Something I realize I have very few of are vases. I love using Mason jars or simple things like them to hold flowers, but wanted to find something else for this one. Looking through a china cabinet reminded me of this Belleek vase my Aunt gave me a long time ago. She was my godmother and had given me a few pieces of Bellek, a type of Irish pottery, for special occasions. It was fun to rediscover this vase and made me think of my Aunt who passed away a few years ago.

Visit Noelle to see her pretty April garden bouquet or to join in with her.

  1. Ooh, such wonderful blues and purples! Love those bluebells, and I have recently decided that Dicentra are the world's most perfect and wonderful flower, though I will never be able to grow them myself. Nothing like a little flower envy. By the way, that is a perfect vase for your blue bouquet!

  3. You've done it again - created a beautiful bouquet when you thought you had very 'little' to work with. Ohhhhhh the Columbines are blooming at your house. Don't think mine are yet. Just got back and need to go look around.
Love your vase - Belleek is so beautiful and dainty looking. The perfect thing for your Aunt to leave you since you have so many great flowers.

  5. Hi Catherine~~ I'm not even that fond of blue, but your bouquet is dazzling and lovely and fresh.

Vases abound at thrift stores. I like to get the small vintage apothecary jars and plop two or three small thing in them. Right now I've got Lily of the Valley in one and a few lilac sprigs in another. Nose candy!!

Love your new blog digs. Just as I'm struggling to learn html and css and blah, blah, blah... Blogger launches new templates. Go figure. Still, it's all good.

  6. Oh... how beautiful! You have inspired me to go out and cut a bouquet! Maybe it will keep me in the house for a while tending to inside chores!

  9. As soon as I saw your photo I wondered if that was Belleek...the Shamrocks rather gave it away, but I'm glad you confirmed it. The blues in your bouquet are lovely, and the arching white bleeding heart looks so graceful and elegant, and goes perfectly with the fern fronds too.

  10. Hello Catherine,

I love your blue bouquet! Navelwort is one of my favorite flowers from your garden and I love seeing it in your bouquet. I do love blue flowers and they all work so well together.

Thank you so much for participating :-)

  12. Hi Catherine. Your bouquet of blues is so pretty. And the vase is so pretty. Belleek is a collectors item now so your gift is not only meaningful because it was from your aunt but getting better with age.

  13. Catherine, what a lovely bouquet! I love the forget-me-nots combined with columbine and bleeding heart, especially -- but the whole thing is lovely!

Some of your flowers are found in the Victorian flower meanings dictionary, too: fern for magic, confidence or shelter, sweet woodruff means wheel of time, forget-me-not for true love or memories, and purple columbine for "resolved to win." I wonder if that speaks to you and your life right now in any way. :)

  14. Perhaps you could consider flower arranging as a second career?

Maybe it's just me - but spring just doesn't seem to want to get going over here.

(My kids went to Ireland a couple years ago with their college band and my mother in law went to Ireland a long time ago...one of these days it will be my turn)

  16. Such a breathtaking bouquet and I loved the story of the pretty vase. You have great skill at putting the elements together, something I totally lack. The starry eyes are the crown jewel in this bevy. :-)

  18. Beautiful, especially the Belleck. I am looking at my Beleeck vase now filled with dried hyrangeas from last fall. I think I need to replace them with some beautiful spring blooms.

  20. It is such a beautiful bouquet. I need to go cut and bring some in soon before they are gone. Our lilacs are starting to bloom but I don't breathe with them around. I have to check out the Spanish Bluebells. I really like them.

  21. All those colors look so well together! You did a great job of placing them in the vase and yes, so difficult to cut a pretty flower. I rarely bring flowers inside as I enjoy them in the garden so much...

ps I didn't have luck germinating the primula veris until I put them outside. Maybe that will work for you??

  31. This bouquet is so beautiful, love the blues and purples. Perfection! How nice that you have a vase like this to remember your aunt by. I have a huge collection of vases now, almost all from thrift stores and garage sales. It's kind of extravagant, but fun ( and really cheap). I may have to participate now that I know of this. Sounds like fun.
