A walk down the garden path...

It sure was one of those mornings that calls to you to take a walk outside. There was blue in the sky, the birds were active and the bright sun just drew us out to soak in it's warmth. The pathway is a favorite part of our yard, though narrow it always seems to have some sort of activity taking place. This morning the birds were everywhere on it; the Chickadees, Stellar's Jays, Juncos and Robins were out in full force looking for something to eat.

A look down the the path is seen through my favorite purchase last year, the arbor. The arbor has a Clematis on each side, both showing signs of new growth. I hope my vision of a flower framed shaded path will happen this year. It is probably the thing I am most looking forward to seeing.

One of the many Juncos that were in the path garden today.

At the end of the straight part of the path is the big Cedar tree. I see the perfect spot for a double Hellebore right in front of the Hydrangea, too bad we couldn't find one today at the nursery. After I finished with pictures I got all of the foliage cleaned up on my Hellebores, what a difference it makes!

My favorite Hydrangea across from the Cedar tree. I'm crossing my fingers for flowers this year. Last year a late freeze killed the flower buds. This year I'll be out with sheets to protect it if any more freezes are predicted.

Some of the Pulmonarias have buds. I divided this plant and spread it all down the path. I think it is 'Roy Davidson', it has done great under the Cedar tree.

The Corsican Hellebores are getting closer to blooming.

Heading back down the path towards the pond you can see lots of bulbs sprouting. There are Bluebells, Snowflakes (leucojum), Crocus and Daffodils planted.

A look back through the arbor to the pond.

And my favorite picture of the day is my Littlest Gardener taking a little run down the path.

This week we have lots more rain predicted so it was nice to take advantage of a dry and sort of sunny day to enjoy being outside and breathing in a little fresh air.

  7. Hi Catherine, What a treat to get outside and enjoy searching for new growth today - it was much too windy here today for that. I love seeing your garden in the different seasons and waiting along with you to see the clematis fill your arbor with pretty blooms. The Littlest Gardener always puts a smile on my face - she must be such a delight as your garden assistant. I love all your bird activity too.

  17. I have said this before, but I really like the flagstone pathway. Very nice. I think Pulminaria is a great plant and underused in my area.

  18. As always, wonderful photos, Catherine! I just love the one of the cute fat junco sitting on the fence. You have a great view down that path through the arbor. It is going to look great with Clems growing on it. I had to read the caption on the pic of the Littlest Gardener to make sure it was her. Does she look older from behind, or has she shot up in just the last few days? LOL Love those pink Wellies!

  19. Perfect day for garden clean-up, felt more like April didn't it?! Love your side-garden path and that arbor is going to look amazing with all the clematis growing over it. I saw a leaf bud on my summer clematis today too, plus a lot of other things that were not poking out last week. Woo hoo! Great junco shot. Did you want the double hellebore after seeing the Tiger Mountain one? :) You have reminded me to go uncover my pulmonaria, I think it is buried under last fall's witch hazel leaves!

  20. PS Love the pic of the LG running. Are those pink boots covered with horses? They look an awful lot like some belonging to a certain family member of mine too!

  22. Thanks for all your nice comments! Poor Littlest Gardener ended up with a stomach bug not long after I posted this. Hopefully she'll feel better in the morning.

Karen - Her boots actually have Hello Kitty on them :)

  23. Hi Catherine~~ I always enjoy photos of your garden. So much is going on. Your hellebore patches put mine to shame. The look healthy and vibrant. I hope you can find the double you're looking for. Your daughter is adorable. I like her wellies.

  24. I enjoyed walking down the path with you Catherine - your photos make me feel that I could just step into them. Have removed my hellebore leaves now - much later than usual because of the cold weather. They are not as advanced as yours but are just beginning to open :)

  25. Dear Catherine, Your hellebores are looking very good indeed. It does make such a difference to their appearance when all of last year's leaves are removed and they are given a feed and general tidy.

Talking of feed clematis, as I am sure you probably know, are very hungry plants. Give those on either side of your new arbour a generous handful of compost mixed with some fish, blood and bone meal [not always easy to obtain these days] each month from now on.

  26. The last shot was my favorite too, Catherine. Pure joyfulness in pink! It is looking so good, bulbs, hellebores, hydrangeas and clemmies, yummm! :-)

  28. Catherine, you are torturing me with your talk of blue sky, bright sun, active birds and most of all WARMTH.

Judging by the size of the trunk, your cedar tree must be huge.

It's always enjoyable to walk around your yard with you via the photos.

  31. This stroll warmed my bones today! The pic of a blurry child on a walking path tells me she had somewhere to be in the garden! Great pic indeed...

  32. It is a welcome sight to walk down your path today since mine is snow covered once again. You have so many little green things appearing along the path. Your fern is still green and so big behind your hellebores. One more in front of the hydrangea would fill it in huh? I hope your hydrangeas do not get hurt this winter either. It would be nice to have more blooms next summer. Mine were missing last summer also.

  33. Wasn't yesterday another incredible day! I was out weeding still when the moon came up and it was definately dark! Between having most of my garden in raised beds and this fairly unusual weather we have been experiencing, I have yet to run into a spot in my garden that I shouldn't be. But I have avoided the one known wet spot and I certainly would take the tractor out to the Market Strip in the pasture even though Pumpkin Lake is just a little mud puddle this year.

Your helebores are just so lovely and your pansy pots on your deck, what a cheery little spot you have. If I was a little girl in a pink skirt and pink boots I would skip up and down that path all day too!

I've been collecting up all my old king size sheets and having them stationed on Cigar Porch for when we get the warning of a harsh freeze later on. I hope it doesn't come, even the skater in me is done with the idea of ice this year, too many things think it is spring already (including me).

  34. Everyhing looks beautiful...but the photo of the Littlest Gardener & her pink boots is priceless.

  35. Spring comes so early for you! Your arbor is such a delight, and looks established already. Like the photo of the junco and the cute girl skipping down the path.

  36. That little gardener looks look a flower herself in that picture! :)

Your hydrangea sure is on the run...mine looks like its trying to sprout some leaves, but I'm sure we have a couple of major frost left this 'winter'. My honeysuckle is trying to take off already though!

  40. The arbor and the stone path are lovely, even in winter. I can see that soon everything will be lush and beautiful with blooms. The atmosphere in your garden is so joyful. I am looking forward to your spring!

  41. Awww, your littlest gardener brightens the day for me! She's so cute. I hope she's feeling better now?
I think it was such a good idea to put an arbor where you did ~ it frames your path so perfectly. I will hope with you that it's smothered in flowers this year. That would be gorgeous.
and yes, keep those sheets handy so we can see your hydrangea blooms as well. Don't you hate it when Mother Nature wipes out something you've been looking forward to? Happens almost every year to me. Thanks for walking us around your yard. It's definitely looking good (and about like April or May here!)

  43. Ahhhh, I truly needed that this morning... your lovely backyard with all that new life coming forth the ground gives me hope... the bleak landscape of my garden, still under it's long long winter spell, indicates me I'd have to wait some more to see any life... (sigh) I'm so tire of winter! ;) and your "Littlest Gardener" is the cutest, what a perfect morning!

    Have a lovely day

  47. Hi Catherine,
Wow, your camera takes excellent pictures. Of course you do too! Glad you showed which camera you use, it's helpful insight for me.
    Thank you! :-)

  48. Your garden is beautiful even in the middle of winter! How exciting to see some things close to blooming. We are still frozen solid where I am... the winters here in New England really are sooooo loooong... we've still got another month and a half of bad weather ahead of us.

  49. Just so precious to have a few moments of warm sunshine this time of year! Everything seems to be waking up!
