Excuses, excuses.

I always have a reason to buy something  garden related.  Even at the grocery store I can find an excuse to buy something to plant.  I find that I frequently decide where to buy groceries based on where I think there will be some plants, seeds or flowers to buy.  Often I bypass the neighborhood grocery store and drive to the next town over because there is grocery store there with a good selection of annuals and perennials.  If I need a few groceries and it's a sunny day, why not kill 2 birds with one stone?  Grocery shopping not being a favorite chore of mine, needs to have some sort of pleasure in it.
Here are some primroses that we picked out yesterday.  I just needed a few things, but those flowers caught my eye on the way in.
I think it's displayed the same way they put candy and sugar cereal at children's eye level.  Only, I don't have to beg anyone to buy it for me!  So, home they came with us.  I know this is just the beginning of the season of making out of the way grocery stops to pick up eggs and a flower or two.  Any excuse to go where there are plants.
Maybe the nursery's could start having a cooler by the check stands with milk, eggs and juice.  That would make it so much more  convenient for gardeners!

  1. Those are gorgeous, and I, too, would have had a hard time passing them by! Anything to brighten up a grocery shopping trip!!

  2. Catherine, this is so funny! I'm exactly the same way about planning my grocery trips around plant availability! The gardening bug sure makes us do crazy things, eh? Although, those primroses are anything but crazy. Beautiful!

  3. Said true, Catherine. I do the same. I'd deliberately go to a store that's near the seeds shop and would tell my mom - "I couldn't resist!" when she looks at me akimbo.

  4. I love your analogy that flowering plants in grocery stores are like candy displays for adults! So true. I also like a grocery story with good plant displays, especially my nearby Kroger, where I walk right into the flowers as soon as you go in. Lovely!

  5. Oops, forgot to answer your questions. Yes, that is a bleeding heart in front of the pink rose. I love them, but they take up lots of space. I don't have one here for that reason. That is the only time I was successful at rooting roses, I've tried it other times with no luck. Snap off a piece from the tallest part of the plant, dip the end in rooting hormone, then stick in the ground and cover with a glass jar till you see foliage. Remove jar, and enjoy!

  6. They are so pretty. I have always loved these. I bet they come back there, they did for me in Germany, but not here in Tennessee.

  7. They're gorgeous! I'm a sucker for pretty flowers at any time, but especially come February when winter has gone on a bit...!

  8. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! It was hard stopping at 4.

Msrobin - I thought that's what that was. I may have to try rooting a rose this year. I've always wondered if I would have luck.

Tina - Yes, they do come back here. Unfortunately the slugs love them and eat the flowers before they have a chance to fully open.

  9. I agree about just having groceries at the nurseries. What a time saver that would be! We were out the other day and I sadly held back from buying anything to plant now out of fear of more frost and such. Of course, on our stoop there's two flats of plants from a month ago ... Happy planting

  10. I'm the same. I get the plants home and have no idea where to put them. I always seem to find a place though.

  11. Jan - they sure did brighten the cart up!

flowrgirl1 - I am too. I think it's that vibrant that color just pulls you in.

Donna - I thought it was just me. I don't think I've ever told anyone I did this before.

Chandramouli - I guess that's what makes a true gardener. We'll do whatever it takes to get our plants.

Nutty Gnome - Yes, right now I'm really feeling a pull towards those plants.

Melanthia - The ground is so cold, no wonder you haven't planted them yet. Maybe we'll get a few more days of sun to warm the ground.

Garden tips - Yes, they often sit there for awhile until I can figure out what to do with them, they do manage to find room somewhere.

  12. And you just have to have one of each color! They are so pretty. I would have not been able to pass them up either. Now your thinking, groceries at the nursery.Afraid my family would starve though--

  13. Sounds good to me! Combine grocery shopping and plants--I love it. It would make the store prettier.

  14. What beautiful plants! To have them near the staples would be wonderful... so much more fun to push the grocery cart! ;-) Have a great day and a fun time putting them in the ground!

  15. I love those primroses and your idea for nurseries to sell milk, eggs, etc. Pharmacies do, so why not?

  16. Exactly! Retailers have been doing it wrong all these years. And flowers don't have any calories, fat or artificial anything.

  17. Hocking Hills Gardener (Lona) - There were many more colors too. My poor family practically does in the summer when I'm outside all day.

Anna - I think the stores would be much prettier!

Shady - I still need to get them in the ground, they just look so cute in the bag though :)

Sue - Maybe we need to start a movement, nurseries with groceries!!!

Grace - I never even thought about no calories. In fact you burn them as you dig the holes to put them in!

  18. Those sure would be hard to resist. Their colors are so cheery and pretty after you've had a long cold winter, with six more weeks to go.

  19. I love the idea of buying groceries at the greenhouse! I'd be re-inspired to do more meal planning. Your primroses look like spring!

  20. "I find that I frequently decide where to buy groceries based on where I think there will be some plants, seeds or flowers to buy" I think I need to add this to my 'You know you're a gardener when...' he he- I do it too.
