Fertilizer Friday - October 22

We had another beautiful day here yesterday, but things changed overnight.  Rainy days after a string of very sunny ones are not so bad this time of year.  They are a good excuse to get something done inside, like send seeds to people I promised them to.  This year I'm glad to have my garden shed to work in and have somewhere to keep the seeds and bulbs that have usually by now started piling up all over the desk.  I've got a basket of bulbs needing to be planted, it was fun finding some new varieties to try.  At the nursery the other day I found Snowdrops, Chionodoxa 'Pink Giant', Fritillaria uva-vulpis and Tulip 'Green Spring'.  Once I find somewhere to squeeze them in along with new Allium, Tulips and Daffodils I may go back for more.
Now for some flowers that I don't have to wait to see until spring:

Hydrangea 'Ayesha' had one fresh bloom as do a couple other Hydrangeas.

Scabiosa 'Beaujolais Bonnets' was new this summer and I kept forgetting to take pictures.  It suddenly has put out a lot of new growth and flower buds.

Rose 'Lady Emma Hamilton' is still looking gorgeous and full of flowers.

Now the Cosmos have decided to bloom like crazy.

Calendula has lots of new flowers too.

The Abelias are loaded with flowers.  They are mostly evergreen here and bloom for a very long time.

New Violas waiting to be planted.  I'm going to plant them in the front flower bed and mix in lots of spring bulbs with them.

Pansies and Pennisetum in a container.  The grasses won't make it through a frost, but I love how they look together.

As I walked through the yard I noticed how wet my feet were feeling.  Guess this combination of socks and flip flops wasn't very effective, it's time to pull out the rubber boots now.  And no, I would never wear this combo anywhere other than my yard.

Now I hope you'll visit Tootsie at Tootsie Time to see what she's up to and what other gardeners have blooming this Fertilizer Friday.

  1. Catherine you still have a lot of beauties out there. I have planted lots of bulbs, more lilies this year. I am just waiting to see if those squirrels go after my tulips again this year.

  3. LOL! Hey I am glad to see that I am not the only one who goes outdoors with socks and sandals on. LOL! I think I am just going to do one thing and my socks will be safe and of course I get sidetracked and come back with some pretty dirty socks on.
I planted a Scabiosa Beaujolais Bonnets last week. I so loved all the pictures of it and I needed something on the bank in the rose bed. No bare much must be left uncovered. LOL!
That Calendula is so pretty and fits into the fall landscape. You are going to be busy planting I see.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. I love the colors of your blooms and sweet pansies. It seems to me you should be able to dress anyway you like in your own garden. It is good to have something one can quickly step into. Have a lovely weekend Catherine. ;>)

  5. Very cute with the socks and flip flops, Catherine! I love the Scabiosa bloom photo- it looks as though it's floating in mid air to me- in face a few of your blooms do. Happy fall to you.

  6. You're funny!! Does that compare to my rainbow colour crocks, white ankle socks and capris? Hmmmmm. You still have so much happening in the garden. How wonderful to see flowers this time of year! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Nice to see all those fresh blooms. I had Beaujolais Bonnets last year, but it didn't return, yet I have other scabiosas that return faithfully. Hope it does better for you--and likely will, where you're a warmer zone.

  8. Wow, I can't believe you can still plant violas this time of year!! Your hydrangea is stunning! Now that gardening season is over here I can splurge on some indoor plants, and might actually have a blue hydrangea one day!

  9. Hi Catherine. It's so beautiful around your place. Lady Emma Hamilton's color is just so nice. I hope that your and your family (and Gracie!) are well. The fall is such a busy time for everyone. One must remember to relax a bit.. and not get caught up in things.

  17. Stunning photos of your flowers! I planted a few violas in pots. I love the tiny little lines on them, it's as if someone painted them on with a paint brush. The hydrangea is beautiful! I didn't think it would grow this time of year! Lovely. Have a nice weekend.

  18. I had wet feet yesterday aswell! I've admired Ayesha many a time on your blog Catherine - but I'm quite amazed at how long a growing season you have - so many things look so lovely and fresh and green unlike here.

  19. Catherine,

I never appreciated Calendulas until I saw your wonderful photo! I too often work in the garden in wool socks and Dawgs something a little like flip flops.

  20. I don't think I have ever seen a Scabiosa that color. How pretty!

That rose is a beauty too!

    Happy fall Catherine!

  22. Yes, it's really time for the boots now!
I have one wonderful rose that is blooming and blooming, despite the frost. What a bonus!

  23. I've been lurking for a while, admiring your beautiful garden and photos, but have to comment today. I have the same scabiosa - it is so pretty. The first frosts are beginning to cut swathes through my garden this weekend, so it is lovely to see yours in hearty bloom still. Belinda

  24. Its funny I always have what looks like a huge pile of bulbs but when I come to plant them out there never seem to be enough

  25. Oh, the scabiosa is so pretty, as are all of your flowers still blooming. We are having rain this weekend too and I did the same thing as you did, went outside in sandals and socks! I wasn't intending to be out there long, but you know how that goes.

  26. Hi Catherine, I don't know I think those socked toes sticking out from under the flip flop straps are quite the fashion statement. Still I know what you mean. I actually put on my tennis shoes the other day. How strange. I live in flip flops and sandals all summer.

I still want to try this Scabiosa but I haven't found it for sale in these parts yet. And my 'Ayesha' hydrangea cutting actually put out a small flower. Yours is just luscious. Love those pink pansies too!

  27. I'm having to dig for new footwear too and not liking it. Things are so much simpler in the summer!
Love that shade of pansies (with the grass) ~ just beautiful.
Maybe Cosmos do better with cooler temps? Mine really come on in fall too. Glad yours are blooming. It's still looks so pretty there. Have a terrific weekend.

  29. So beautiful.

I am sure that I have a hydrangea Ayesha also, but mine is bubblegum pink. I am now going to have to go and search the internet for photos. I absolutely love the denim blue tones in yours.

  31. Catherine, your October garden is still full of wonderful blooms! Your hydrangeas are beautiful. They must love your garden! That new rose is certainly prolific with its gorgeous blooms. No wonder you love it.
My cosmos had a great summer but is almost finished now. Yes, it does seem to like the cooler weather.
I grew a very similar Scabiosa called "Summer Berries Mix". I love the color. I see Jodi says some overwinter for her. I wonder if mine will. Hope so!
Love the pansies and grass together...and the flip flops and socks combo too :) We gardeners must have "easy-on" shoes, right?
Hope the frost holds off a while and lets you enjoy your lovely blooms for a couple more weeks at least. It's so hard to see them ruined by the cold.

  32. Your garden is still looking great, Catherine! There are lots of pretty blooms. the scabiosa is gorgeous. I've never seen one that color before. You will enjoy your bulbs in the spring, Catherine. We planted daffodils and galanthus. Something to look forward to!
    Blessings, Beth

  33. Your new pansies are a nice combination of sweet and elegant, with the pale yellow and dark purple petals. Will they last through the winter for you?

How fortunate to still have Hydrangea blooms, even a few. 'Ayesha' is a nice lavender colour. My Hydrangea are now brown for the season, but I'll leave them on until spring.

  34. Hi Catherine. Thank you for such a gorgeous collection of flowers. It's the first time I've seen the scabiosa - such an extremely beautiful flower.
I love the violas (a lot of us call them Johnny-jump-ups here). They are jumping up everywhere in my spring garden now.
The cosmos are only just starting to come up, so many seedlings that I have to pick a few out. It's lovely to see yours in full bloom - they're a delightful plant aren't they.
    Cheers from Australia :D

  38. Catherine, we have the same fashion sense. I often walk around the yard wearing socks with flip flops. Luv the photo....the blues, green and white. Perfect.

The 'Beaujolais Bonnets' bloom almost looks 3-D.

We've also had a long stretch of sunny days and now we're in the middle of a string of rainy days and today....VERY windy.

  39. You have such beautiful blooms still at this time of the year. We are done with all blooming now except for a stray sedum sprout. I brought in an oxalis that is blooming well in the house but would have frozen a couple of days ago.
